More than 80 musicians, parents and trustees of the St Michaels & All Angels Steel Orchestra took part in a fund-raising sponsored walk last Saturday in Stonebridge. And that required some courage as the free event started at 5.00am, that’s right, at the crack of dawn. But it was for a good cause. As part of the St Michael's Youth Project, the St Michael and All Angels Steel Orchestra is looking for help to fund his work. The dedicated band of young steel-pan musicians is covering a wide range of musical genres, from traditional calypso standards to classical favourites by Beethoven and Tchaikovsky. According to the Diocese of London, the musicians have improved local community cohesion by performing regular concerts in care homes and day centres : “Through their tireless voluntary work, they have gained essential life skills in teamwork, social interaction and finding solutions to personal and academic challenges.” Band master Alfred Toussaint that founded the band in 1996, added in an interview given to the Harrow Observer, that the steel band aims to keep kids focused: “If you listen to them play it sounds like a miracle. To play classical music on steel drums the drums have to be well tuned. But if they are it sounds magical. Hopefully the project will raise the youngsters' self-esteem, develop them as people, educate them and teach them how to work with others. It may sound a little odd but some people say Tchaikovsky was mad, and listen to the beautiful music he created." WinkBall reporters were here to collect impressions from the crowd.
