Walk the Walk: The MoonWalk London2012 - Hyde Park

Francesca D'Marco and Rebecca Burgess

WinkBall reporters recently took to the streets of London to talk to participants of the annual charity event, The MoonWalk. Granted, the title provokes fond memories of pop legend Michael Jackson, but The Moonwalk is a pre-London Marathon sponsored power walk, usually in decorated bras, to raise money to put towards Breast Cancer research methods. Each of the women embark on a 26.2 (full moon) or 13.1 (half moon) power walk, which begins at midnight and ends, hopefully, well before midday. The Walk the Walk charity was founded by Nina Barough and it began as a fun idea to bring together a group of women to power walk the New York City Marathon in bedazzled bras 16 years ago. The money they raised went towards the construction of the first dedicated centre for research into breast cancer. It is common knowledge that you must apply and keep fingers and toes crossed for the London Marathon lucky dip. MoonWalk began as a way of ensuring everyone can take part in a marathon walk to raise money for charity. The event has spread its wings to Edinburgh and also in Newcastle, Bristol and Southampton where they host the SunWalks. If you would like to leave a message to the walkers, someone you know who has been affected by breast cancer or just your general opinion on this then record your wink below!
