This Sunday saw the opening of Sonnet Sunday at the Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. Sonnet Sunday celebrated the opening of the Globe to Globe festival; boasting 37 plays in 37 different languages. Globe-to-Globe is even expected to feature Shakespeare portrayed in hip-hop styles by the highly acclaimed Q Brothers. Shakespeare’s Globe will host this festival over six weeks, as part of the World Shakespeare Festival. Sonnet Sunday began at 10:00am, featuring a marathon of an exceptional 154 sonnets in over 20 different languages; ranging from Norwegian to Arabic to Klingon. Sonnets were also heard in Somali and Cree for the first time…ever! Sonnet Sunday promised internationally appealing theatrics from the Aborigine theatre company, Yirra Yaakin and Welsh actor, Owain Arthur from ‘One Man, Two Guvnors’. Shakespeare fans could also anticipate music from Bow and Bellows and acapella performances from the Wing-It-Sisters. And this West End experience was free for all! Winkball reporters Alex Fisher and Oliver Borrow were at the Shakespeare’s Globe on Sunday 22nd April 2012, to interview the audience to find out what they thought of the show and their highlights of the day.
