Chelsea v Newcastle

Chelsea 0-2 Newcastle In a game that produced what could perhaps be the goal of the season, Champions League chasers Newcastle United got a smash and grab victory against fellow top of the table rivals Chelsea in a 0-2 victory at Blues ground Stamford Bridge. With both Newcastle goals coming from their superstar January signing Papiss Demba Cisse, it was Cisse’s second goal that grabbed all the headlines and is now certain to be a candidate for goal of the season. To many in retrospect, it was perhaps not surprising that Newcastle pulled off this fantastic away victory with Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo resting a number of key players ahead of the forthcoming FA Cup final against Liverpool this Saturday. Peripheral figures such as Frank Lampard and Juan Mata did not feature, but with Chelsea not wanting to rely solely on Champions League qualification via winning the final against Bayern Munich in a matter of weeks, their domestic campaign was still a priority and this fixture would be treated with respect. Alan Pardew’s Newcastle side have been a joy to watch this season and have been seen as the surprise package of the Premiership. Their open attacking football has entertained the neutral football fan as well as the passionate Toon Army fans. Players the likes of Artem Ben Arfa, Yohan Cabaye, Demba Ba and man of the moment Papiss Cisse have set the league alight and they have been key to the Toon’s success. With striker Cisse grabbing 13 goals in 12 games, his contribution to the Newcastle front line has been vitally important and given the team an impetus that has seen them become a serious competitor for Champions League football. Cisse’s goals were again vital last night at Stamford Bridge as he saw Newcastle defeat Chelsea 0-2. His first goal, almost sublime as his second, came on the 19th minute when a flick and left footed volley flew past helpless Chelsea keeper Petr Cech. Newcastle continued to dominate the game when Cisse’s partner in crime Demba Ba hit the woodwork, almost making it 0-2 to the visitors. With the game heading in to the 90th minute, there was an extraordinary 10 minutes of extra time added due to a clash between Toon midfielder Cheik Tiote and Blues midfielder Jon Obi Mikel that resulted in Tiote having to be stretchered off. Looking to kill off the game and take home all three points, it was Cisse who was found on the left hand flank when Shola Ameobi flicked on a throw into his path. The Senegalese striker then with his first touch struck the ball with the outside of his right foot and watch his shot rocket into the underside of the net as the ball flew and swerved over keeper Petr Cech. The game ending 0-2 to Newcastle, at the final whistle, everyone could not stop talking about that wonder goal from Cisse. The goal perhaps even overshadowed the great result for Newcastle as these three points put them on level points with Spurs and only one point behind third placed Arsenal. European Champions League qualification is looking a realistic possibility with it now being a race between Arsenal, Spurs and Newcastle. Chelsea will now hope to spoil the party and have to rely on winning the Champions League Final against Bayern Munich and making the fourth place league spot redundant. With this loss, Di Matteo’s men are now four points behind Spurs and Newcastle with only two games to go. On Wednesday 2nd May 2012, WinkBall video reporters Laurent and Billy were at Stamford Bridge speaking to fans at the Chelsea v Newcastle game. Speaking to both sets of fans, they were asked for their predictions ahead of the game and of course got their reactions to that wonder goal from Cisse!
