It was absolutely superb; she is a great talent and wise beyond her years. Sonia thinks Laura Marling has an amazing voice and it made the gig feel personal. Laura Marling is the new Joni Mitchell and my favourite song was ‘Rambling Man’.

Laura Marling: Hammersmith Apollo

Event Date: 08/03/2012

London’s HMV Hammersmith Apollo is hosting Laura Marling on Wednesday 7 March for what will be her largest ever UK headline show – it is part of her biggest UK tour to date, where she will play 11 dates throughout March. Marling’s alternative folk songs belie her 22 years, as her striking melodies and astute lyrics draw comparison to artists including: Regina Spektor, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young Ryan Adams to name a few – though it is impossible to pinpoint her exact likeness, such unique ambiance does Marling have. In only five years, Marling has migrated from a fresh-faced acoustic vocalist to definitive indie-queen pop star, offering contemporary folk/rock to the masses, performing at festivals and winning awards. This March tour followers her unique and atmospherically brilliant ‘When the Bell Tolls’ tour, where she performed at some of Britain’s most admired cathedrals. Laura’s debut and follow-up albums, ‘Alas, I Cannot Swim’ and ‘I Speak Because I Can’, were both Mercury Award nominations. They, now alongside her new, third, album ‘A Creature I Don’t Know’, helped her earn the Best British Female Solo Artist award at the 2012 Brit Awards, as well as NME’s best solo artist title from their most recent awards. Fans at the Hammersmith Apollo can look forward to elegant acoustics from this indie-folk princess, whose timid presence contradicts her resonant vocals. How did the fans find her at her biggest UK venue to date?
