WinkBall were once again at the heart of the action for Britain’s most renowned cultural events, the Proms. An eight-week summer celebration of classical and orchestral music, the Proms is a must on the British social calendar. Taking place at the iconic Royal Albert Hall in London, every day from July 13 to September 8. Most of the events take place at the iconic Royal Albert Hall – though other venues include Cadogan Hall for the chamber concerts, and the Proms in the Park events across the UK to mark the last night. The twenty-first night of the BBC Proms 2012 celebrated Aldeburgh World Orchestra. Sir Mark Elder conducted the Aldeburgh World Orchestra. In the second of four appearances this season Sir Mark Elder directs an orchestra of young musicians brought together from every continent. The programme begins with Britten’s Sinfonia da Requiem, both a private memorial to his parents and a reaction to the developing menace of war. Next we sample Mahler’s big-boned lyricism, an idiom Britten particularly esteemed. The world premiere of a BBC commission from a young composer to watch is followed by the iconic work whose unveiling provoked a scandal for Diaghilev and his Ballets Russes.
