Madonna: NIA Birmingham

Birmingham waited nearly 30 years for Madonna to grace the Second City with her presence. And last night, Thursday, 18th 0f July,2012, thousands of fans gave her a regal welcome as her Madgesty took to the stage at the Birmingham's NIA for her MDNA tour. Tickets were changing hands for upwards of £450 a pair for a night of drama, spice and a generous helping of controversy. The rain may have put a dampener on her Hyde Park gig on Monday night, but under cover at the arena, there was no chance of the audience leaving early. Despite a 45-minute wait, from the moment she stepped on stage, pistol pointed at the crowd, Madonna was ready to shock. Her look was less Material Girl, more Bond villain, with backcombed locks and skin-tight trousers as she play-fought with a gaggle of gun-totting dancers. Opener Girls Gone Wild from new album MDNA may not have been the obvious choice for the first song, but die-hard fans soon got Into the Groove as a paired-down version 80s anthem Papa Don’t Preach made way for Abba pastiche Hung Up. As expected, tracks from her 12th studio album MDNA featured heavily, but it was feel good classics such as Open Your Heart and the still-controversial Like A Prayer that proved why 53-year-old is the original and the best. WinkBall video reporters were there as well speaking to the fans about their idol, Madonna.
