Responsible for one of the most iconic anthems of the 1980s, those knowledgeable in popular culture will be aware of Simple Mind’s signature tune “Don’t You (Forget About Me)”, which was best remembered in classic eighties brat-pack movie ‘The Breakfast Club’. Hailing from Scotland, Simple Minds were one of many bands to come out of the New Wave Pop Rock movement throughout the eighties along with other groups such as Big Country, Echo and the Bunnymen and Aztec Camera. This new Wave style of music struck a chord with many and was seen as an exciting and fresh progression of the punk movement that had dominated music towards the end of the seventies. Led by frontman Jim Kerr, Simple Minds have inspired bands the likes of Coldplay and Franz Ferdinand and it is classic tunes such as “Belfast Child” and “Alive and Kicking” which have ensured the band remain firm favourites with music lovers. Simple Minds have also found a voice politically with their music, what with their release of single “Mandela Day” which celebrated Nelson Mandela’s 70th birthday and demanded his release from prison. Jim Kerr has himself explored other projects outside of Simple Minds including a solo career where in 2010 released his first solo album ‘Lostboy! AKA Jim Kerr. Now over thirty years after their original formation, lead singer Jim Kerr and guitarist Charlie Burchill are the only original band members to form part of the new Simple Minds line-up. 2011 saw them embark on a Greatest Hits tour where they performed all their classics to both original and new fans across the globe. At the end of this tour, it was announced that 2012 will see Simple Minds perform a 16 date tour in Europe. The tour named ‘5*5’ would see the band play for the first time five songs from each of their first five albums released from 1979 to 1982. This tour would kick off in Portugal and appropriately end in Dublin, Ireland, what with the bands’ Celtic roots. To prepare themselves for this exciting tour Simple Minds have played a number of small gigs across the UK to whet fans appetites for their music and give fans a taster of what to expect from their ‘5*5’ tour. On Friday 2nd March 2012, Simple Minds played to fans at London’s intimate venue the Roundhouse. WinkBall video reporters Fred and Stefan were down at the Roundhouse speaking to Simple Minds fans and finding out what had brought them down to the gig, what they loved about Simple Minds and what expectations they had of the evening
