Meet the Athlete: Michael Johnson at the Apple Store

Event Date: 12/07/2012

Regent Street’s Apple Store is at it again with the big name open interviews – Wednesday 11 July sees the floor open for an hour between 3-4pm to ‘Meet The Athlete: Michael Johnson’ – the retired American sprinter, now athletics pundit. The sprinter still holds the 400m and 4x400m world and Olympic records, has won four Olympic gold medals and an incredible eight world championship gold medals (making him the joint top gold medal winner in history – tied with Carl Lewis). More records include the fact he is the only male athlete to win both 200m and 400m sprint events in the same Olympics – that Games being Atlanta 1996. And when he won gold in the 400m again at Sydney 2000, he became the only man to successfully defend his Olympic title. Thus, Johnson is considered one of the greatest long sprinters in the history of track and field athletics. Added to this is his friendly commentary style – most recognised to UK residents from BBC coverage – making him a well-liked addition to the sports and athletics coverage. He made headlines last week (June 30) ahead of London 2012 for suggesting descendants of West African slaves have a ‘superior athletic gene’, and thus black American and Caribbean sprinters will command the sport at the London Games. His forthright opinions and experience in sports will make him a great interviewee and really enjoyable experience for attendees at the Apple Store, as he talks about his career, his best selling book Gold Rush and his upcoming apps.
