Fulham 1-1 Chelsea On Monday 9th April 2012, Craven Cottage was the location for the highly anticipated West London derby between Fulham and Chelsea. With Tottenham Hotspur slipping up earlier that day with a 1-2 home defeat to Norwich City, Chelsea were keen to capitalise on this and keep in pursuit of that elusive final Champions League spot. With Newcastle winning and going equal on points with Spurs, the Blues had been leapfrogged by the Magpies and left them in sixth position in the league. Since the departure of manager Andre Villas-Boas, and the arrival of interim manager Roberto Di Matteo, results appear to have been going Chelsea’s way with their league form steadily improving and the team in two Cup semi-finals; the European Champions League and The F.A. Cup. Attentions turned to the league as they visited West London rivals Fulham and hoped to continue their pursuit of European Champions League football next year. Their West London neighbours Fulham have had another solid season. Under the new direction of Dutch manager Martin Jol, the Cottagers had a shaky start to the season but have now found momentum with them currently sitting comfortably in mid table. Playing open attacking and ambitious football, Fulham have wowed their fans this season with a number of high scoring games. The game between Fulham and Chelsea eventually ended as a 1-1 draw. Chelsea’s Frank Lampard put the visitors ahead with a penalty to make it 0-1 and to make it a personal best of 150 top-flight goals for himself. Fulham soon brought back the deficit with in form striker Clint Dempsey levelling it with his headed effort. Dempsey has certainly been one to watch for Fulham this season. His equaliser made it sixteen Premier League goals for him this season and twenty-two overall. With the game ending one apiece, Chelsea had blown the chance to go into fourth position, and with their slip up, fellow Champions League chasers Spurs were spared for their earlier loss and held on to fourth spot. WinkBall video reporters Michael and Archie were at Craven Cottage speaking to both sets of fans.
