Tuesday 13th December, 2011 – If Gardner says, ‘Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day’, Raymond Gubbay made sure last night was the Royal Albert Hall’s singing evening. The classical music promoter hosted a Raymond Gubby Christmas Festival: Christmas Classic at the Royal Albert Hall for fans of the classics at Christmas. The audience were wooed with performances from The London Chorus and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The Christmas Classics included: Walking in the Air by Blake, the Opening Chorus of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio and the beautiful Pie Jesu from Lloyd Webber’s Requiem. While Lesley Garrett was deemed to be ‘the hostess with the mostest’, the shining Northern star of the evening was young male chorister, Laurence Kilsby, who seemed to steal the show as he reaped rave reviews for his soprano performance. While Robert Dean conducted with aplomb, he let the audience loose on some carols for all. Ye faithful did indeed come together; what better way to embrace the festive spirit than some en masse caroling in a venue as spectacular as the Royal Albert Hall? The Christmas gala was crowned with a special performance from Lesley Garrett, and you can see from the video wall that the audience were delighted and left fully in the spirit for this special time of year.
