WinkBall were at the Royal Albert Hall for the fifth night of the Proms, 2012. It marks the start of the eight-week summer season of classical and orchestral music, plus other events, performed every day from July 13 to September 8. Most of the events take place at the iconic Royal Albert Hall – though other venues include Cadogan Hall for the chamber concerts, and the Proms in the Park events across the UK to mark the last night. The sixth night celebrated Fung Lam’s world premiere of his Endless Forms, Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor and Prokofiev’s Symphony No.6 in E flat minor. Youthful Proms first-timer, Hong Kong-born Fung Lam, unveils his Darwin-inspired BBC commission, his first for the BBC Symphony Orchestra. After the sparkling success of Kirill Gerstein's Proms appearance last year, the pianist returns with Rachmaninov's ever-popular Second Piano Concerto, the work that crowned the composer's recovery from a period of crippling depression. Prokofiev's bleak and powerful Sixth is perhaps the most personal and poignant of his symphonies, completed in the exhausted aftermath of the Second World War amid worsening pressure on the Soviet front. WinkBall video reporters will be finding out from the attendees what makes the Proms such a great, unique British event, and more…
