Set in working class Liverpool, Willy Russell’s musical play Blood Brothers has been a firm favourite with audiences in the West End for many years and developed a cult following amongst theatre fans. Telling the story of fraternal boy twins who are separated at birth, the musical tells the story of their lives as they grow up on different sides of the social spectrum and how their lives are turned upside down when discovering their existence of one another. Their story told from the perspective of the twins’ mother Mrs Johnstone, the show gained notoriety for its exploration of social issues such as class and for its explosive finale. Despite not being on the grandiose scale of other West End shows the likes of Les Miserables and Phantom of the Opera, the show has always pulled in big crowds and has boasted big names as its lead performers. Notable performers of the role of Mrs Johnstone have been, Barbara Dickson, Kiki Dee, four of the Nolan Sisters, and more recently Spice Girl Melanie Chisholm. Still at its home of the Phoenix Theatre, on Wednesday 1st August 2012, Winkball video reporters Zoe and Laurent were down at the theatre speaking to fans and finding out from them what had brought them down to see the show and what they love about the show Blood Brothers.
