Adapted from the award winning and box office smash hit Disney movie of the same name, ‘The Lion King’ has entertained theatre lovers on both the West End and Broadway stage since it first made its debut on Broadway in 1997. Going on to become Broadway’s seventh longest running show of all time, the musical has performed over an astonishing 5,000 times, grossing over $800 million along the way, making it Broadway’s most commercially successful musical. Its transfer to the West End in 1999 has been just as successful with the show being a number one tourist attraction for visitors to Great Britain. Telling the story of a young lion cub named Simba who must flee his homeland Pride Rock in and go into exile under the false knowledge that he is responsible for the death of his father Mufasa. In line to one day claim the throne of Lion King from his father, Simba abandons these dreams and learns a new care free way to live under the guidance of comedic duo, Timon and Pumba, whilst his evil uncle Scar, who was responsible for the death of Mufasa, rules over as the new Lion King with an evil and absolutist fist. Now much older, Simba encounters his childhood love Nala who informs him of the evil goings on at Pride Rock thanks to Scar. Returning to Pride Rock, Simba must defeat Scar and avenge his father’s defeat to become the new Lion King and restore balance to the Circle of Life. Featuring classic and timeless songs from the musical creative geniuses Elton John and Tim Rice; songs such as “Circle of Life”, “Can You Feel the Love Tonight?” and “Hakuna Matata” have made ‘The Lion King’ one of the most loved and popular musicals around today. Using the amazing art of live puppetry to give the stage show life beyond its animated roots, ‘The Lion King’ continues to entertain theatre goers and bring in new audiences who fall head over heels for this show. Performing at the Lyceum Theatre on London’s West End, on Thursday 24th May 2012, WinkBall video reporters Helena and Lucie were down at the theatre for the performance of ‘The Lion King’ speaking to fans before and after the show and finding out what they love about this classic stage musical.
