WinkBall were once again at the heart of the action for Britain’s most renowned cultural events, the Proms. An eight-week summer celebration of classical and orchestral music, the Proms is a must on the British social calendar. Taking place at the iconic Royal Albert Hall in London, every day from July 13 to September 8. Most of the events take place at the iconic Royal Albert Hall – though other venues include Cadogan Hall for the chamber concerts, and the Proms in the Park events across the UK to mark the last night. The sixteenth night of the BBC Proms 2012 celebrated Elgar, Hugh Wood, Ravel and Debussy. Joanna MacGregor was the pianist for the night and Ryan Wigglesworth conducted the BBC National Orchestra of Wales A British first half pairs Elgar’s concert overture, inspired by a winter holiday on the Italian Riviera, with the Piano Concerto by Hugh Wood (80 this year), which sees him tapping into the live wire personality of tonight’s soloist, for whom it was written. The all-French second half reflects new light on Debussy’s masterly orchestral seascape with two pinnacles of water-inspired piano music, transformed for the symphony orchestra.
