With a unique alternative-country style, Ryan Adams has been a prolific force in the world of alternative music. Having released 13 studio albums in an 18-year music career, it is difficult to find an artist who has released music as regularly (and still keeping as high a standard) as Adams. Throughout his long career he has collaborated with artists such as Norah Jones, Weezer, Toots and The Maytals and many more. Adams began his musical career fronting the band Whiskeytown, marking a change in Adams’ genre from punk-rock to the alternative country that has defined his career. Whiskeytown earned huge critical acclaim as they were snapped up by a major label to release their second album. At the turn of the millennium, Adams decided to take his work solo and leave Whiskeytown. 2001 saw one of the most prominent moments of his solo career. Following up his debut album solo album “Heartbreaker” with the best-selling album “Gold”, Adams filmed the video for the song “New York, New York” in front of the famous skyline just four days before the devastating terror attacks of 9/11. This sheer chance moment gave Adams a breakthrough to mainstream audiences, as VH1 and MTV broadcast the video. After releasing three solo albums, Adams joined up with backing band The Cardinals to release five albums in just six years. According to Consequence of Sound, joining with The Cardinals offered “a new beginning for Adams”. After releasing 4 of their five albums, The Cardinals took a break for Adams to take his first step back from the music industry in ten years. He returned to release “Cardinals III/IV” and his own solo album “Ashes & Fire”. Monday 23rd April 2012 saw Ryan Adams take to the stage of the London Palladium. Winkball reporters Fred McCormack and Nick Hansen spoke to fans before and after his gig to find out why they love Ryan Adams and their review of his performance.
