Thumping bass lines and hypnotic guitar solos, Californian funk rock band Primus were in London as part of their European spring tour which has seen them so far perform dates in France, Belgium, Italy and Germany. On Wednesday 4th April 2012, Primus performed their first of two performance dates at grandiose musical venue the Royal Albert Hall. Consisting of band members Les Claypool, Larry “Ler” LaLonde and Jay Lane, the band have had numerous changes in membership with bass player and lead singer Les Claypool being the only original and founding member still part of the group. Formed in the mid 1980s, it was their combination of funk and rock metal that helped them cause a stir in the local music scene in San Francisco. Soon, it was not long until the band cut their first record with ‘Suck on This’, a live album by Primus, being released in 1989 which was subsequently followed by their first real studio effort, the 1990 album ‘Frizzle Fry’. Although not always enjoying the commercial success that some American rock bands could ever boast, Primus and their irreverent and humourus approach to music has always earned them cult appeal with fans. With their music tinged with elements of comedy, the band has drawn influence from the likes of the experimental Frank Zappa to the psychedelic Pink Floyd. Always treating music as an art form, the music videos of Primus have always tried to incorporate clay animation and other cartoon work, thus showing them further to be a band with a unique and niche appeal. Performing their first of two dates at the Royal Albert Hall, London, on Wednesday 4th April 2012, WinkBall video reporters Lucy and Laura were speaking to Primus fans that had come down to see the band perform. Asking them what had brought them to see Primus, fans were asked what they loved about Primus and what were their expectations of the evening?
