A play that has turned heads for it’s alternative perspective on the natural order and process of Child birth, Joe Penhall’s stage play ‘Birthday’ has earned rave reviews and garnered strong interest from theatre goers for its interesting and original concept. Birthday tells the story of Lisa and Ed, a married couple who are expecting their second child. This time round however there is a huge role reversal in that Ed is not only the father to be, but also the mother to be! An exciting and original piece of theatre that is both funny and extremely entertaining, Birthday takes a look at and answers the age old question of what it would be like if men were the ones to endure the pain of childbirth? In the play, we see a heavily pregnant Ed, who comforted by wife Lisa, goes through all the emotion, pain, hormonal imbalance and joy that can be accompanied with child birth, to hilarious effect! Starring an all star cast, featuring the likes of Stephen Mangan, who many will know best from TV’s Green Wing, Episodes and I’m Alan Partridge, the show is brought to life under the direction of Roger Michell, whose theatre credits include Almeida and Female of the Species, as well as directing well known motion pictures such as Notting Hill and Changing Lanes. Performing at the Royal Court Theatre in London, the show begun its run in the West End on 22nd June and will continue to perform for a limited run until the 4th August. On Thursday 12th July, WinkBall video reporters headed down to the Royal Court Theatre to speak to fans that had come to see the performance of Birthday. Fans were asked what they expected from the performance and after the show, what they made of the play in general?
