Can we talk about this? National Theatre

Event Date: 14/03/2012

Playing at London’s renowned the National Theatre, ‘Can we talk about this?’ is an exciting and imaginative production that explores the many different ideologies of religion and politics. Based on significant events in history from Salman Rushdie’s ‘The Satanic Verses; to the work of revolutionary film-maker Theo Van Gogh, the show’s interpretation of these events reflect what effect and influence culturally they have had for society, and looks further into the notion of free speech and censorship. Using the emotive form of physical theatre to examine and interpret these events and convey them in a new perspective, ‘Can we talk about this?’ explores these ideas in a new way that is both alternative and intriguing. Performed by well-known and established physical theatre production company, DV8, this current production of ‘Can we talk about this?’ has been enjoying its premiere at the National Theatre in London after finishing a successful world tour. On Tuesday 13th March 2012, WinkBall video reporters Stefan and Lucie were down at the National Theatre to speak to fans that had come to see ‘Can we talk about this?’ With the show being performed by physical theatre group DV8, fans were asked how familiar they were of their work and what would they expect of this new production from them? Exploring political and religious content through the act of physical theatre, fans were also asked how they felt the show’s subject matter would be successfully conveyed and portrayed, and afterwards fans would be leaving their reactions.
