Crewe Alexandra v Cheltenham Town: League 2 Play-Off Final

Event Date: 28/05/2012

Cheltenham Town 0-2 Crewe Alexandra Crewe Alexandra set their stall for League One promotion after Nick Powell’s magnificent volley just fifteen minutes into the game. Cheltenham could have equalised – they’ll be particularly haunted by Jeff Goulding’s 25-yard strike off the crossbar. But after a nervy middle-game, the Alex sealed their win eight minutes from time, thanks to Byron Moore’s slotted shot. Cheltenham can hardly have been surprised to fall victim to Crewe, after their stunning form throughout the close of the season. Crewe’s last defeat was in February – a 2-0 loss to Southend – at that point they were 12th in the League and far off promotion dreams. Since then though, they scored in all 19 of their following games, bulldozing their way to seventh and a promotion opportunity. Alas, with success in the lower leagues, there is often courtship and loss – Nick Powell is a rumoured target of Manchester United. How could he fail to catch the eye, having claimed every Crewe players’ award on offer? And now with a Wembley Final goal to his 18-year-old name, the list of suitors has presumably extended. All in all this game and this season will be remembered for the wondrous season and strike from Powell, and for Crewe boss, Steve Davis’s incredible effort to lift the team to promotion and a fantastic end of form, having only been appointed manager in November 2011.
