Proms: Debussy, Ravel, Falla at the Royal Albert Hall

Proms: Debussy, Ravel, Falla at the Royal Albert Hall

Prom goers were in for a night of Franco-Spanish classical music at the fabled Royal Albert Hall on Friday, 22nd July. With three pieces from Debussy's 'Images', Ravel's 'Rapsodie espagnole' and 'Alborada del gracioso,' and Falla's 'Nights in the Gardens of Spain' all conducted by Juanjo Mena, the new Chief Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic, attendees had a truly pleasant evening to look forward to. French composers Debussy and Ravel pioneered the field of impressionistic music, with melodic orchestral textures that paint a picture for the listener. Spanish Andalusian composer Falla has been named as one of Spain's most important musicians of the first half of the 20th century. The pianist for the night was the prolific and renowned Scottish born Steven Osborne, who has won numerous awards for his performances, including the Gramophone and the Shallplattenpreis. Winkball reporters Carla, Ralph and Fred interviewed those attending the evening, asking about their expectations, their favourite parts of the performances and their view of spectacle of the Proms as a whole.
