Move over Mick Hucknall, the UK has a new favourite ginge. (Wait, well, second to Prince Harry anyway). Certainly a new favourite ginger singer – Ed Sheeran. And to prove his super-status, Ed Sheeran’s run of October gig dates completely sold-out in quick time. Indeed this Brixton Academy performance, on Friday 20th January, was his biggest ever headline gig of his skyrocket career so far. Not only does Ed rock a unique look, he also offers a unique sound: combinations of electric guitar, acoustic folk, hip-hop beats and gentle, melodic vocals. He’s been putting in the work, too – nearly 250 gigs in the past 12 months. Even likened by his fans to a combination of Bob Dylan meets Paul Scholes – would Ed Sheeran make your ‘A-Team’ or your first-XI? Ed has worked with artists you wouldn’t expect, judging by his folk-acoustic sound – such as grime stars JME, Ghetts and Wiley on his No. 5 Collaborations Project EP. However, this is a large part of his wide-stretching appeal. The ‘A-Team’ track is certainly what pushed him into the mainstream music scene, and he’s found further fame ever since, with plenty of feature requests from fellow artists looking to jump on the Suffolk singer’s hype.
