The Drums: Roundhouse

The Drums: Roundhouse

What better way to rid yourself of the Monday feeling than going to Camden’s Roundhouse to dance your blues away? This is what was happening on Monday 27th February, anyway, as people filled the famous venue for another NME Awards Show gig, this time headlined by indie-poppers: The Drums. The five piece from Brooklyn USA capture that classic indie-rock/pop and new wave vibe, delivering catchy ballads and infectious tunes that make for a lively live performance. Inspired so clearly by bands including The Smiths, New Order, Joy Division and The Wake, The Drums are definitive Anglophiles – so must love their UK leg of touring. Especially as they’ve commended the UK fans in the past – perhaps helped by the fact there is more Drums-love on our shores than across the water in Brooklyn. They’ll be performing from their 2011 album, ‘Portamento’, plus some favourite indie classics from their debut L.P. Their performance will surely be a mix of the infectious summer sounds from their debut album, combined with the more angst-ridden and emotionally evocative lyrics of their latest ‘Portamento’ playlist. And leading the party will be impressive frontman, Johnny Pierce – the pouting singer hides behind his blonde locks, with closed-eyes when singing his more lovelorn lyrics, yet has a, erm, unique swagger when moving around on stage. Sometimes compared to a drunken uncle, Pierce sways and waggles around with an unpredictable jazzy rhythm that is as infectious as it is eccentric. Undoubtedly, this one sandwich short of a boy-band indie-band, will shake up the Roundhouse for the evening as they engage in something of a ‘homecoming’ at the classic capital venue.
