Man City vs Man Utd - FA Cup 3rd Round

Event Date: 21/12/2011

Manchester City 2-3 Manchester United: Revenge was on the cards for the red side of Manchester as they visited Eastlands and played rivals Manchester City for the first time since their 6-1 defeat at Old Trafford in October. Headline news before kick off was the return of Paul Scholes, who answered calls from team mates to return and help his injury stricken side for the remainder of the campaign. After dominating the opening exchanges, cup holders City fell behind from United's first attack of the game; Rooney starting and finishing the move with a sublime header past the City stand in keeper. In a torrid 5 minutes for City they then saw red as influential skipper Vincent Kompany was given his marching orders for what seemed like a challenge only worthy of a booking. With the one man advantage United took control of the first half as first Wellbeck and then Rooney added to the scoresheet before the interval. At half time the game seemed all but over, however a spirited fightback from City was well on the way as Kolarov curled in a exquisite free-kick giving the home support something to cheer. The introduction of Scholes at 3-1 was a substitution to see the game out, however his slack return pass lead to City's second, as Sergio Aguero continued his fine form as he was the first to follow up from his own shot firing past Lindegaard. United managed to hold on to their lead and will now be the team to beat in the remainder of the competition.
