Dogs, dogs, dogs! Mans best friend will be celebrated all-round on Sunday 15 April at The Mayhew Animal Home's HYDE BARK event hosted by The Lord Mayor of Westminster, at Hyde Park. (Of course!) The puppy love begins at 10am and runs through until 6pm, with stalls, entertainment and activities arranged to occupy people and pooches all throughout the day. The ‘Diamons Dogs’ show starts at 10.30am; people will be entering their beloved dogs for just £3 from 9.30am, to show off their pups to some special guest judges. The first is for the ‘Prettiest Lady, Handsomest Male, and Shiniest Coat’ – a totally biased award, surely, because everyone thinks they have the prettiest dog at home. Next up are the cute and fun competitions: ‘Waggiest Tail, Best Friends (with children under 16 yrs), and Owner Lookalike’. At 11:30am the judges will select the ‘Best Veteran, Judge most like to take home, and Cutest Puppy (6-12 months)’ Aww! The latter will surely be a cute one to see; even those not keen on dogs can’t fail to be wooed by a puppy, surely? Midday is for the Sweetest Staffie; a breed that takes up most of the kennel space across the UK, due to their incorrectly labeled bad reputation. ‘Best in Show’ is saved for 12.30pm. It is not all watching though; dog owners could bring their beloved four-legged friend to join in with the fun of the day. The Mayhew have organized their take on the Diamond Jubilee, playfully called the Diamond JubiLEAD; a sponsored dog walk beginning at 1:45pm. There was an agility course, an amusing ‘Temptation Alley’, pet/vet advice, dog training advice and all sorts of pet-related stalls. The foodie treats aren’t just for the owners; the doggies could enjoy Billy & Margot’s doggy ice cream, and Snaffles Biscuit Bars. All money raised from the event was for The Mayhew Animal Home, and their fantastic job of helping their cats, dogs and rabbits. Events like these are so important for animal rescue centers like the Mayhew, as they rely on donations to keep running and taking care of our beloved creatures. We caught up with all the dog lovers at Hyde Park - with their prized pooches - there to enjoy the day, enter some competitions, and generally share a lovely day fundraising and raising awareness of the work of The Mayhew - and all animal homes and charities.
