Marina And The Diamonds: Shepherds Bush Empire

Coming to the attention of the music industry after being placed second behind pop soulstress Ellie Goulding in the BBC Sound of 2010 poll, Marina Diamandis has carved out a unique fan base what with her vintage chic look and quirky pop style in her music. Known by the stage name Marina and the Diamonds, this is not to be confused as a group name as Marina herself explains that she is Marina and her audience are the diamonds. Hailing from Wales, Marina can also count Greek as part of her heritage and the use of the word diamonds in her musical moniker is a literal translation of her Greek surname Diamandis. Marina and her music take influence from an eclectic variety of different sounds and artists. Her music, being of an indie pop and new-wave persuasion typically draws inspiration from artists the likes of Daniel Johnston, Blondie, Tom Waits and PJ Harvey, however Marina has shown a fondness for the more mainstream pop sounds of Britney Spears, Dolly Parton and Madonna. With 2010 being a breakout year for her what with being named in the BBC Sound poll, the year also saw her release her debut studio album ‘The Family Jewels’. Featuring popular tracks the likes of “Hollywood”, “I Am Not a Robot” and “Shampain”, the album received a strong critical reception with many music journalists seeing her work as savvy, fresh and crossing many different genres of music. Things got better for Marina in 2011 with her supporting pop superstar Katy Perry on the US leg of her “California Dreams” tour. The year also saw her unique style and image being recognised on a wider scale with her being named as the new face of Max Factor UK. Towards the end of 2011, Marina was pleased to announce that she would be releasing new material. New album ‘Electra Heart’ will be released in April 2012 and to coincide with this, Marina and the Diamonds has been playing a number of gigs to promote the forthcoming album. On Sunday 26th February 2012, WinkBall video reporters Oliver and Daniel were at the 02 Shepherds Bush Empire for the performance of Marina and the Diamonds. Speaking to her fans, they were asked what they loved about Marina and the Diamond’s music, would they be purchasing her upcoming album and what were their overall expectations of the evening?
