“We Are Women. We Are Funny.” This is the mantra of Funny Women, and I suppose it should be the refrain of women everywhere. But what is it that makes the ladies at Funny Women laugh? Funny Women is a comedy event that was held this year at the Grange Tower Bridge Hotel, in line with International Women’s Day 2012. This year is their 10th Anniversary and they are celebrating with a message – that women can match men, laugh-for-laugh, and are an equal match when it comes to making people chuckle. Their event at the Tower Bridge Hotel was a challenge of perceptions and a challenge for ten high-profile – and brave – women from the world of business, media, politics and academia, who were dared to perform a stand-up routine for the first time in their lives. Not only was it to raise awareness of the comedic qualities of ladies, the event is supporting raising funds for ten great causes, with help from ten of the UK’s most well connected women’s networks. Hosting the event is none other than the beautiful and charismatic television presenter and founder of Goodypass, Kate Garraway – who was on the judging panel for this year’s Funny Women Awards. Another tag line is ‘Helping Women Find Their Voice’, because that is exactly what they do – having seen nearly 2,000 acts since their 2002 launch, they help women find the courage to work in comedy professionally. But it is not solely about working in comedy – Funny Women help women bring comedic and humorous values to their business and professional lives too. This is why the Funny Women event was attended by a number of successful women in the business world from many of the country's leading companies. It was a chance for women to come together and network whilst empowering each other and embracing the role of women in today's work place. Funny Women is a brand that helps to nurture and promote female comedic talent. Founded by former journalist and broadcaster Lynne Parker, Funny Women has enabled many women to take that first step into the comedy world and be leading figures on the comedy circuit.
The hundreds of women in attendance at the Grange Tower Bridge Hotel, including successful business women and comedians, were asked the simple question: What makes you laugh?
