QPR vs Wigan

QPR 3 – 1 Wigan WinkBall sent reporters to Loftus Road to ask QPR fans about the appointment of Mark Hughes – and the departure of Neil Warnock. Plus we enquired how fans feel about their players using Twitter – especially Joey Barton. We also probed Wigan fans for advice for Roberto Martinez on avoiding relegation. QPR displayed the sort of performance that typically comes after the appointment of a new manager. The Hoops’ 3-1 victory over Wigan saw them jump out of the relegation zone, and encourage their new manager, Mark Hughes. With a succession of losses so far in 2012, Wigan remain firmly rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table. With both teams currently circling the Premier League drain, this fixture – complete with a managerial switchover – made for quite a feisty match-up. Rangers were gifted their lead half an hour in, thanks to James McCarthy’s foolish handling in the penalty area – Heidar Helguson converted the penalty. Despite missing too many chances – probably why they are fighting for their League resistance – QPR remained the dominant side throughout. Akos Buzsaky was responsible for two of the first-half misses, but countered them with a 25-yard free kick that went beyond the reach of Ali al-Habsi, and in off the right post. Wigan came into the game more after the break, with more possession and pressing play. It saw them awarded a free kick – in exactly the same area as Buzsaky scored for in the first half – and Hugo Rodallega converted too, blasting his free kick past Kenny, and by proxy offering the bottom-side a glimmer of hope for a point. Alas, it was not to be, as Hughes’ newly inherited QPR persisted with attacking play, which culminated with Tommy Smith’s stunning 25-yard strike. The forward was added to bolster the attack at half time – and a great decision it was by the new manager, as it secured their victory and escape from the bottom-three. What did you think about Mark Hughes' Premier League managerial debut? And tweet us @WinkBall about what YOU think about footballers using Twitter? (We love it!)
