A Midsummer Night's Dream: Lyric Theatre

One of William Shakespeare’s most loved and cherished pieces of work; ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ is a romantic comedy that entwines a number of characters that include Oberon and Titania the King and Queen of the Fairies, servant Puck and Athenian lovers Hermia, Helena, Lysander and Demetrius. Their stories all connected by the celebration of the wedding of Duke of Athens, Theseus and his Amazon Queen, Hippolyta showcase the trials and tribulations of love all set amongst the backdrop of the magical and enchanting forest. The play has enjoyed a long and lasting legacy on the stage with it being a popular adaptation for many companies specialising in the works of William Shakespeare, particularly the Royal Shakespeare Company where renowned punk legend Toyah Wilcox famously portrayed the role of Puck at the iconic Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre in London. London’s Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith has proudly presented a new and exciting production of William Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. Completely unorthodox, wildly inventive and extremely experimental, this new interpretation of Shakespeare’s classic romantic comedy has wowed audiences and critics alike for its sheer imagination and new take on an old classic. On Thursday 8th March 2012, WinkBall video reporters Daniel and Tom were at the Lyric Hammersmith to speak to fans of the Bard and find out what had brought them down to see this new production of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. With the show an exciting and experimental piece of theatre, fans were asked what their expectations were of this promised twist on this classic show.
