Prom 35/36 Liszt, Glière & Rachmaninov/ Steve Reich & Ensemble Modern

Event Date: 10/08/2011

On Wednesday, 10th August 2011, the BBC Proms continued with Liszt Mazeppa, Glière Concerto for Coloratura Soprano and Rachmaninov's magical lyrical Second Symphony. The Hungarian composer Franz Liszt’s symphonic poem is based on Victor Hugo's poem about the legendary Mazeppa concerning a nobleman caught in flagrante and tied to a wild horse, which is then driven into the night. The evening also treated audiences to Glière Concerto for Coloratura Soprano, which has not been sung at the Proms since the 1980s and Rachmaninov's gloriously lyrical Second Symphony, a recent favourite. Conductor Kirill Karabits conducted the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and Ailish Tynan (soprano) with a symphonic unity that took the audience’s breathes way. In addition, The Proms celebrated founding father of American Minimalism Steve Reich’s 75th Birthday year playing with a distinguished instrumental ensemble. Some of his most famous pieces such as his ‘Music for 18 Musicians’ are widely recognized. WinkBall reporters Dean, Hannah and Henry were present to gather the audience’s expectations and reviews of the concert.
